The Highway of Tears
A long isolated stretch of highway in BC hides a deadly mystery.
A little-known Highway in Northern BC; The Highway of Tears is a 724km (approx 450 miles) length of highway, known as Highway 16, that stretches from Prince Rupert, BC, on the west coast, to Prince George, BC, in the interior.
It's hard to explain to people that haven't been here how remote and isolated the communities are that dot that highway. 23 First Nations communities border the Highway of Tears, named due to a large number of missing and murdered women linked to the highway.
These small communities are unfortunately mostly poor and lack things like public transit, doctors, and in many cases places to get groceries and even gas for your car.
These conditions force people in these communities to resort to hitchhiking to get to larger communities for things we take for granted. Do you have a toothache and need to see a dentist? While if you lived in a larger center it would be no problem, but for these communities, most would have to hitchhike to see one. There just isn't enough basic health care among other things for these little villages, and their people often have to go elsewhere.
