Canadian Incel Drives Van into Crowded Toronto Sidewalk
Self-proclaimed “incel” dives his van onto a Toronto sidewalk, intentionally striking pedestrians as he sped down the street.
On April 23, 2018, Alek Minassian drove his rented van onto Yonge Street in Toronto’s North York business district. He continued south, intentionally hitting pedestrians.
Pedestrians screamed and leaped out of the way as the van sped south along the sidewalk, swerving into people. At one point the sidewalk narrowed, so Alek just drove it to the east side of the street and continued swerving at pedestrians on that side as well, before returning to the west side of the street.
Toronto Police Constable Ken Lam was the first officer to arrive on the scene, approximately 10 minutes after the attack began. When the officer confronted the van, Alek got out of the van and began to approach the officer.
He kept making jerky movements like he was going to pull a gun, and Officer Lam yelled at him to drop his weapon.
