On April 23, 2018, Alek Minassian drove his rented van onto Yonge Street in Toronto’s North York business district. He continued south, intentionally hitting pedestrians.

Pedestrians screamed and leaped out of the way as the van sped south along the sidewalk, swerving into people. At one point the sidewalk narrowed, so Alek just drove it to the east side of the street and continued swerving at pedestrians on that side as well, before returning to the west side of the street.

Toronto Police Constable Ken Lam was the first officer to arrive on the scene, approximately 10 minutes after the attack began. When the officer confronted the van, Alek got out of the van and began to approach the officer.

He kept making jerky movements like he was going to pull a gun, and Officer Lam yelled at him to drop his weapon.

“Shoot me in the head!” Alek yelled at the officer.

Ken Lam could be heard on video giving direct commands to get down on the ground and rejecting calls from Alek to shoot him.

Ken Lam was cool under pressure, he yelled at Alek to drop his weapon again. Officer Lam noticed that the “gun” Alek had was not a gun at all, just some junk Alek was pretending was a gun.

At this point, Officer Lam holstered his firearm and drew his baton, and moved in to arrest Alek manually. Officer Lam ordered Alek to the ground, and this time he complied, and was arrested.

In the 10-minute attack, Alek killed 10 people, and another died in hospital months later.
